Alya SHANDRA: «UNPROFESSIONAL SLANDER.» UKRAINIAN ROCKET EXPERTS SLAM NYT ACCUSATIONS OF NORTH KOREAN LEAK

On 14 August 2017, the New York Times published an article by Pulitzer winning journalists William Broad and David E. Sanger stating that North Korea’s recent ballistic missile success is explained by black market purchases of rocket engines “probably from a Ukrainian factory,” namely – the Yuzhnoye construction bureau in its Russian transcription, or Yuzhmash, now known as Pivdenne, located in Dnipro. North Korea’s 4 July 2017 launch of the HWASONG-14 rocket with a range over 5,500 km had beemphawildered specialists. While the rogue country was in the possession of a nuclear bomb starting from 2006, the short- and medium-range rockets it managed to develop were able to carry it to South Korea, Japan, and US bases in Guam. Its attempts to create an intercontinental ballistic rocket capable of striking the USA were all unsuccessful. That is, until 2017.

Nicolas TENZER: «STRONG POLARIZATION IS INHERENT TO THE SOCIETY AS WELL AS TO THE POLITICAL ELITE OF FRANCE»

France's two traditional major parties are rejected by the vast majority of French society. Many people in France are willing to move beyond the dichotomy between the Left and the Right. They want to leave behind mutual unfruitful accusations and pick up some solutions from both sides simultaneously. Nowadays, we can witness similar trends in other European countries. But if we consider the traditional parties in France (the Socialist Party and the Republicans), it is important to emphasize the strong divergence among leaders within each political force. There is quite nothing in common between the platform of the winner of the Socialist Party’s nomination Benoit Hamon, who represents the left-wing side of the party, and someone like Manuel Valls (former Prime Minister of France) who appears to be a social-democrat. At the same time, if we consider the Republicans, there are quite nothing in common between strong right leaders Francois Fillon and Nicolas Sarkozy on the one hand and Alain Juppe (former Prime Minister) who is more centrist, on the other hand. Those divisions are visible to the naked eye.

Valentyn BADRAK: «U.S. MILITARY ASSISTANCE TO UKRAINE "OPENING UP PORTALS"»

The decision of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress to allocate $150 million in military assistance to Ukraine so far does not provide for sending any lethal weapons (although we hope it one day will). For Ukraine, it is important that by adopting this decision, the U.S. authorities have demonstrated they were ready to pursue consistent policies of their predecessors. Thus, the Kremlin’s hopes that the new U.S. administration will change its path and go for tradeoffs with Russia have been destroyed - this message by the Congress indicates that this will certainly not happen, at least in the near future.

HOW STRONG IS RUSSIAN NAVY, REALLY

In its confrontation with the West, Russia has proved that it has much more opportunities to bluff and exert pressure. This allows the Kremlin to actively intimidate Western countries claiming that Russia could create conflict anywhere or inflict significant damage to anyone. It is being done in a show-off manner, using third countries as a training ground, such as in Syria. It is in this very context that we should perceive an earlier statement on Russian naval activity by U.S. Navy Admiral Michelle Howard, who heads NATO's Allied Joint Force Command in Naples and commands U.S. naval forces in Europe and Africa.

Poland sued the European Commission (EC) to the Court of Justice of the European Union over its decision to increase Gazprom's access to the OPAL pipeline from 50 to 80/90%. OPAL is Nord Stream's branch in Germany. The EC ruling will allow the Russian giant to up its gas transfers to Central and Eastern Europe without constructing Nord Stream 2. Thus, Moscow bought time to defend the project against criticism from Poland, Ukraine and others.

The NATO summit in Warsaw on July 8-9, 2016 did not result in any breakthroughs that would give Ukraine an edge over its external aggressor. MICHAEL DAVIDSON: DIRECTED CHAOS. IS BELARUS NEXT?

Reports from opposing sides during wartime should always be treated circumspectly. It is clear, nevertheless, that a state of war exists between Ukraine and Russia. There is no doubt whatsoever that Russia is the aggressor. Indeed the entire region is rightly suspicious of Russian intentions. It is unfortunate that we in the United States remain largely ignorant and even uninterested despite the fact that Secretary of Defense Carter recently named Russia our number one security threat. Just the other day Russian Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev warned that we are on the brink of World War III in Syria. Wherever there is conflict, wherever it is possible to harm American interests or those of our allies, the Kremlin is tempted to meddle.

NICOLAS TENZER: BASIS FOR RUSSIAN INFORMATION WARFARE AGAINST THE EU

Russia’s information warfare is multifold, and so must be the answer of the West. First of all, we must debunk the lies, rectify the facts, resist the assaults of the so-called trolls, and identify the numerous sources of influence that Russia is deploying in the Western countries. Of course, we all know Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik, but there are many others most insidious media which are not labeling as Russian. Then, Kremlin’s propaganda, which is spreading out through media, is not the only one. Russia also appoints politicians, scholars, and consultants, who are advocating Putin’s Russia claims, and repeating key items of its propaganda.

This article has been published initially in "Information & Security: An International Journal" at http://procon.bg/article/integrity-intelligence-countries-eastern-europe. This article examines the evolution of intelligence and counterintelligence services in selected Eastern European countries, formerly part of the Soviet Union, in the two decades of independence. It emphasises transitional influences, the high level of secrecy and the lack of effective parliamentary oversight. In this environment, a common feature of the transition process is the general lack of integrity. Not surprisingly, instead of serving as a guardian against corrupt practices in government, they turn into a major conduit of political and economic corruption.

The paper does not discuss the defence system of any particular country because this would certainly detract from communicating some new ways to assess these unique organizations. Since the beginning of 2015, many analysts began talking about Russia after Putin. Seriously. As Putin is developing the offensive, increasing levels of confrontation, each new day exposes more of the grave outlook: it’s only the collapse of the Putin regime that can put an end to the Russian war in Ukraine. Stakeholders interested in a change of government in Russia are increasing in numbers, and those include inter alia some members of Putin’s entourage. Too many people realize too well that the top person in Russia -- implacable, inflexible and deeply wounded – is deliberately pulling the country into a catastrophe.

His artificially lionized personality has become a grotesque covered with a touch of pompous monumentality. Demonized by the Kremlin Court’s camarilla, ornamented carefully in the news space by the media servants, decorated in numerous books by household jinglers, Putin's image has long moved into the virtual space. For the uninitiated world, he is a treacherous shaman, the one who is shaking the foundations; for thoughtful people he is a vaudeville actor pretending to be a ‘hard-boiled’ statesman. The gap between the reality and the illusory image demonstrated to the public is stunning, and the degree of personality split is unprecedented. The potential effect of his destructive behavior will be of enormous proportions. A modern hero of information technology, he has become a big thorn for the whole civilized world.
